  5. This is the section in  Atari  Update  where we give you the
  6. latest news for the Atari ST/E and  Falcon 030.
  7.  
  8.                    * GASTEINER TRADE-IN *
  9.  
  10. If you have a working  20,  40  or  50Mb hard disk drive for
  11. your computer then you  can  trade  it  in  to  Gasteiner to
  12. knock £150 off of the  new  525Mb  hard drive. This will put
  13. the price of the new mini  design  hard drive from £649 down
  14. to £499 including the Link  SCSI host adaptor. Call Gasteier

  17.                  * TOS 5 WAS NEVER TO BE *
  18.  
  19. Remember rumours of a TOS 5 last year? Well, that's all they
  20. were. Rumours. TOS 5 has  never  been under development, and
  21. probably never will. The latest version  of TOS is v4.92 and
  22. there are no more  developments  being  made  on TOS. If the
  23. Jaguar takes off and  Atari  develop  a  Jaguar computer, it
  24. looks doubtful that it will use TOS technology.

  27.                 * THE HAWK AND THE FALCON *
  28.  
  29. A new rack  system  has  been  released  for  the Falcon 030
  30. called the Hawk.  It  is  designed  to  make  computers more
  31. "acceptable" to musicians by taking the Falcon out of its ST
  32. style case and putting it into a 19 inch rack unit. For more
  33. information on  the  Hawk  (like  the  name!),  please  call

  37.                    * BOB BRODIE RESIGNS *
  38.  
  39. Bob Brodie, Director of  Communicaions  at  Atari, handed in
  40. his resignation on  the  3rd  of  June,  1994.  He  has left
  41. Atari to  work  as  Director  of  Technical  Support  for GS
  42. Corporation, who  are  developing  the  NeXT  step operating
  43. system. Apparently, the reason Mr. Brodie accepted GS Corp's
  44. offer, was because they  were  offering  him a larger salary
  45. and the chance to work  from  home.  Atari  have no plans to
  46. fill Mr. Brodie's now open position.

  49.                * COMIC PUBLISHED ON AN STE *
  50.  
  51. The first ever STE  publication  has  been launched. Rogue's
  52. Warriors is a comic that has been published completely on an
  53. Atari STE. Rogue's Warrior has  been  written by ST Format's
  54. Darren Smithson, who has  written  several DTP tutorials for
  55. the magazine. The comic costs £1.60  and you have to be over
  56. fifteen to read it.  Call  Mr.  Smithson  on 0734 868271 for

  60.             * PIRATED CDS - WE MUST STOP THEM! *
  61.  
  62. Compact Discs ROMs are already  being pirated, thanks to the
  63. drop in price of CD writing systems. Pirates are selling CD-
  64. ROMs packed with  software  like  Lemmings  and Protext, and
  65. they must be stopped. ELSPA  say  that  if these pirates are
  66. not stopped, the CD market will  see a huge decline. CD-ROMs
  67. may die altogether. And just  as  CDs were being released on
  68. the ST. So, if you have  any  information, get in touch with
  69. us, or ring ELSPA direct  on 0386 833810. All correspondance
  70. to us or ELSPA  will  be  kept  completely confidential. You
  71. don't even have to give us your name.

  73.              * ST FORMAT'S FUTURE IS UNKNOWN *
  74.  
  75. According to certain sources, ST  Format may not continue to
  76. be published after this year.  The  reason is obvious: their
  77. readership has declined  pretty  rapidly  over  the last two
  78. years. But, if STF goes, then  what will happen to ST Review
  79. and ST User? They only  have  readerships of 17,00 and 19,00
  80. respectively. Surely, if the  glossy  mags  die, so will the
  81. ST. Don't worry,  though;  we'll  still  be  here to support
  82. you!!

  84.             * SILICA LIST NOW REACHES TWENTY! *
  85.  
  86. Silica Systems list of retail stores has now reached twenty.
  87. Shops, dedicated to Atari software  and  hardware are now in
  88. the following towns: Bristol,  Chelmsford, Croydon, Glasgow,
  89. Guildford, Hull,  Ipswich,  London  (three  stores),  Luton,
  90. Manchester, Plymouth,  Sheffield,  Sidcup,  Southampton  and
  91. Southend. Silica's headquarters still  remains in Sidcup and
  92. can be contacted on 081-309-1111. This number should also be
  93. used for technical enquiries and as an order line.

  95.              * FAMILY ROOTS TWO NOW AVAILABLE *

  97. Remember  Family  Roots?  Well,  Family  Roots  Two  is  now
  98. available.  Priced  at  £29.95  from  Floppyshop,  it  is  a
  99. complete re-write of the original  with loads more features.

  102.                 * JAGUAR EMULATION ON PCS *
  103.  
  104. Atari have teamed up with Sigma to produce a Jaguar emulator
  105. card for the PC. This card  will allow existing PC owners to
  106. play Jaguar games on cartridge  and CD-ROM, without buying a
  107. Jaguar console. The price of this  card is not yet know, but
  108. it is expected to  increase  the  user  base  in  the USA by
  109. 10,000,000!!!  Let's  hope  it   takes   off  before  rivals
  110. Nintendo, Sony and Sega get their machines out....

  112.             * SOMEWHERE, OVER THE RAINBOW.... *
  113.  
  114. Another dedicated Falcon art package  is now available and a
  115. demo version  has  been  released  on  the  coverdisk  of ST
  116. Review. Rainbow, as it  is  called,  boasts a built-in photo
  117. studio, multiple palettes, Tabby  support  and  up to eighty
  118. drawing tools all in one package. The best thing about it is
  119. that it only costs £29.95 from  JCA Europe. Give them a call

  122.               * COMMODORE GO TO SILICON HEAVEN *
  123.  
  124. You know Commodore? The people that make the Amiga? Well, if
  125. you don't already know, they  announced they were going into
  126. liquidation on 29th April 1994  leaving  their UK and Europe
  127. departments in the  lurch.  These  companies  (which are so-
  128. called "profitable parts") are to  be  put  up for sale. One
  129. company that is  interested  is  Samsung  and  it  has since
  130. immerged that they have  50%  shares  in  Commodore. See the
  131. article in this issue for more details.

  133.                        * PD ON CD! *
  134.  
  135. Two CD-ROM discs have just been released, both filled to the
  136. brim with PD and Shareware software  for use with the ST and
  137. Falcon. They have been compiled  by Bernd Lohrum and contain
  138. every sort of PD  you  can  think  of.  Being distributed by
  139. System Solutions,  the  discs  cost  £29.95  each  which  is
  140. brilliant  value  for  money.  Dial  081-693-1919  for  more

  143.                      * SHOOTING STARS *

  145. Star have just brought down  the  prices of several of their
  146. printers on the market. The  majority  of machines have been
  147. brought down by £50, while  others  have  had as much as £50
  148. knocked off of them. Star  printers should be available from
  149. most good computer retailers.

  151.                   * FIRST COMPUTER'S BBS *
  152.  
  153. The Leeds First Computer centre  have  just started up their
  154. own BBS. It is to  provide  technical  support, news and the
  155. company's catalogue on it.  PD  and  Shareware  will also be
  156. available on it for downloading.  If  you  own a modem, dial
  157. 0532 637988. The First Computer  Centre can be telephoned on

  160.                    * NEW PRICE FOR LYNX *
  161.  
  162. The Atari handheld console, the  Lynx,  has now been brought
  163. down to £49.99. This also  includes  a  game, but we are not
  164. yet ssage will dissappear and the screen
  165. will be redrawn and control returned to the active program/desktop.

  167. If the disk in A: is write-protected you will get this message:

  171. If you still want to KILL and IMMUNIZE the disk you should REMOVE
  172. the WRITE-PROTECT tab and press Y for YES, if you have changed your
  173. mind and want to KEEP the DISK as it is just press N for NO.

  175. All disks immunized by Protect6 are auto-booting and readable on
  176. MS-DOS and PC-DOS systemes (IBM's) and contain an info-text.

  178. Link-viruses
  179. """"""""""""
  180. This is a very nasty kind of virus that contaminates program files
  181. and spreads like fire on harddisks.  Protect6 hooks on to the OS-
  182. routines and gives an alert if a program tries to modify another
  183. program (this is the way all known link-viruses spread):
  184.  
  185.     Program is trying to modify FILENAME.PRG
  186.     Any key to modify file, Reset to Abort !
  187.     Call ABK-BBS +47 2 132659, 1200-9600 BPS

  189. FILENAME.PRG is replaced by the name of the program that will be
  190. modified.  If this is OK just press ANY KEY (some programs store
  191. their configuration data this way), BUT if the program currently
  192. running is NOT supposed to MODIFY the indicated file you should
  193. write down the name of the program running and
